His play this season has also pushed Slava into the media spotlight on several occasions, like three times during the
month of January when he went for 20-and-10 or better. Slava doesn't mind doing interviews, but it's something he's getting
used to. "I'm just happy to be with this team and contributing," Slava cliches. "The coaches expect a lot from me, but I try
not to think about that and just play."
|
While he rarely shows enthusiasm on the court, Medvedenko can be hard on himself at times, and it shows. He traces his
oncourt persona to his childhood. "All my life, I have been this way," he says. Growing up in the former Soviet republic of
Ukraine, Slava idolized Ukrainian star Alexander Volkov, the 6-10 post who joined Lithuanian Sarunus Marciulionis as the first
ex-Soviets to play in the NBA back in 1989. When the Lakers signed Medvedenko as a free agent in 2000, GM Jerry West hired
Volkov to serve briefly as a translator. "He has really helped my career a lot," he says. "Especially the first year and adapting
to L.A. I couldn't speak the language when I first got here."
Medvedenko went on to take English courses and continues to do so today. His growing knowledge of the language has helped
advance his game and has made the transition to life in L.A. much easier. The nimble big man has even picked up on SoCal's
love for hip-hop.
"I like listening to it very much," he says. "But I mostly like Russian and Ukrainian hip-hop. There are some very talented
artists there."
